4 Reasons You Need Natural Soap

What Is ‘Natural’ Soap?

Natural soap is made by mixing natural fats and oils with sodium hydroxide (also called ‘lye’).

This process, called saponification, produces soap and glycerine.

Most commercial soaps use petroleum-based fats. This produces detergent, which has a high pH and dries your skin.

Handmade soap promotes your natural pH, so it’s gentle on your skin. Natural oils trap dirt, making it easier to wash away. You don’t get that ‘squeaky clean’ feeling but your skin WILL be clean.

Benefits of Natural Soap

1. Highly Moisturising

Commercial soaps contain detergents. Detergents are great for laundry but BAD for your skin.

The glycerine produced in natural soap-making attracts moisture to your skin.

Unfortunately, large manufacturers often remove this natural glycerine from their products.

2. Superior Ingredients

To maximise profits, commercial soap companies can produce millions of bars at once. They often use cheap ingredients to increase this profit. Many scientists believe these inferior ingredients harm your immune, respiratory, and reproductive systems.

Many dermatologists insist that parabens, sulphates and triclosan that occur in commercial soaps aggravate allergies, disturb hormones, and could even increase your cancer risk.

Natural soaps contain skin-nourishing organic oils like olive, coconut and shea butter. These oils are unrefined, helping them retain their characteristic nutrients.

3. Animal Friendly

Natural soap-making harms no animals because it predominantly uses botanical ingredients.

Also, natural soaps are made in small batches. They cause negligible harm to wildlife and the environment.

If natural soap DOES contain animal fat, it’s sourced from humanely reared livestock. And clearly labelled as such.

Natural soaps need no animal-testing as they don’t contain harmful chemicals like pesticides.

Many commercial manufacturers, however, test their products on animals before they’re considered for human use.

4. Environmentally Friendly

Natural soaps feature biodegradable ingredients which break down safely.

Organic producers also use recyclable (and, usually, recycled) materials, hugely reducing waste.

In contrast, commercial soaps contain hazardous colours and perfumes that pollute watercourses. Millions of people use these products every day, contaminating our waterways with synthetic toxins.

Researchers found that, despite passing through treatment works, these chemicals stockpile in our ecosystems. Harming fish, birds and even plants.

Commercial manufacturers use plastic containers, millions of which go into landfill. Also, many of their products mostly consist of water. They require far more transportation and leave a heavy carbon footprint.

Conclusion

As you’ll see, natural producers take far more care producing a small batch of soap than commercial conglomerates do.

These small companies have ethical goals. And they’re not obscenely profit-driven.

Natural soaps are GENUINELY soap. The traditional processes and ingredients give a gentle, soothing soap bar that leaves your skin looking great.

And saves your planet!
